Samaritans Awareness Day is today, 24 July so we're raising awareness, to let people know that they can talk to them, day or night, 24/7. Every year in July, Samaritans branches in the UK and Ireland hold local events to raise awareness that Samaritans are here to listen to anyone who's struggling to cope, at any time of the day or night.
In June 2024 the officer with Barton Cleethorpes Community Rail Partnership visited Castledyke Primary school in Barton to give a rail safety talk and provided every child with an “Arlo’s Adventures” book. As a result of learning about how to use trains, stations, level crossings and footbridges safely, year 2 pupils and staff decided to put their new knowledge to the test and have a day out on the train.
28 children and 8 adults were provided with free return train travel from Barton to Cleethorpes, courtesy of East Midlands Railways. The children had a lovely time collecting shells on the beach and visiting a local cafe for lunch. BCCRP and EMR provided every child with a waterproof rucksack containing pens, pencils, key rings, reflective arm bands and an activity book. The EMR staff on both trains were very friendly and helpful, and everyone had a fun, memorable day. Dawn Branton, Community Rail Partnership Officer said, “At one point I was asked by one of the pupils to speak to a member of the public because he was over the yellow line on the platform! I’m really pleased my safety talk has had an impact with the children. It is so important that children are aware of any potential dangers before using the railways.”
