Goxhill Station Celebrates Sustainability Success with Wildlife Friendly Award
Goxhill station is celebrating a proud achievement after being awarded Silver in the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and East Midlands Railway Wildlife Friendly Station Awards, recognising its ongoing commitment to sustainability and biodiversity.
The station has been transformed into a thriving green space, carefully designed to support both wildlife and the local community. Thanks to children from the local primary school, more than 100 pollinator-friendly plants now fill the station’s planters, alongside bug houses that provide vital habitats for insects. A diverse mix of planting, including succulents, herbs, grassland areas, and a variety of trees, creates structure, colour, and year-round interest while supporting a wide range of invertebrates.
Sustainability has been at the heart of every improvement. A water butt connected to the waiting shelter helps conserve rainwater, while planters with built-in reservoirs reduce water usage. All planting is maintained using peat-free compost, helping to protect natural ecosystems beyond the station itself.
The station also encourages greener travel and community involvement. Bike racks support sustainable transport choices, while regular litter picking helps keep the environment clean and welcoming for passengers and wildlife alike.
This award is a testament to the dedication of the station adopters and volunteers who have worked to make Goxhill station the model of an environmentally conscious railway space. Their efforts show how even small, local actions can make a meaningful difference, creating a station that is not only functional, but also rich in nature, sustainability, and community pride.

Creativity at Goxhill Station
Here at Barton Cleethorpes CRP we are celebrating a successful year-long project at Goxhill Railway Station. We worked with local residents and the primary school, bringing together rail safety, creativity, and community engagement. After taking part in our Railway 200 “Art Along the Line” competition last year, Children visited the station in April to see their work now on display on Platform 2. Additionally local residents took part in a series of creative art workshops to create a vibrant mosaic celebrating Goxhill’s heritage. Designed by local artist Dominique Driver, the artwork reflects the area’s railway history, agriculture, landmarks, wartime past, and wildlife.

Goxhill Primary School visit to the Signal Box
Barton Cleethorpes CRP is working with the adopters to make improvements to Goxhill station whilst working with teachers from Goxhill Primary school to develop awareness of rail safety and railway heritage. On 3 April 2025, twenty children and three adults visited the Victoria signal box and saw how the level crossing is still worked manually. The children were fascinated by the machinery and how the staff communicate with other signal boxes along the line.

Community Rail Network Awards 2025
The annual Community Rail Network Awards took place in Newcastle on 13 March 2025. And after less than a year as adopters! Well done to everyone involved.

Community Rail Week at Goxhill Station
For Community Rail Week we held a community action day at Goxhill Railway station. We were overwhelmed by the support we received when 8 volunteers and 8 representatives from East Midlands Railway, Barton Town Council and Humber & Wolds Rural Action met at the station to repaint the fencing along platform 2 and around the community garden. They also planted up raised beds with herbs and attached bug hotels to attract pollinators to the garden.

Yarborough Academy
Children at Yarborough Academy in Grimsby have had a great year learning about the railway. Firstly, Miles and Margo popped by and the children helped them make a new advert for TV to Celebrate Railway 200 . Next our officer went along and gave a talk about how to use the trains and railways safely, and to top this off the class of 30 children and their teachers got the chance to put their learning to the test with a visit by train to Cleethorpes.

Train, Paints and Pollinators at Goxhill Station
Adopters at Goxhill station have been very busy this year. After our community action day during Community Rail Week the new herb garden and freshly painted fence were looking so good they was showing up other parts of the station. Our dedicated adopters have now cleared a long strip of land at the entrance to platform two, and added planters and slate to make the station much more attractive and welcoming. Take a look at the before, during and after photos, we hope you love it as much as we do!
